Subject: Support our Nurses – Support Safe Staffing
Dear [Insert Legislator]:
Nurses are on the frontlines of healthcare delivery every day as they care for an aging and increasingly sicker population. And yet in hospitals all around the country, nurses are facing massive reductions in staffing budgets, resulting in an understaffed and overworked hospital workforce.
Understaffing nurses not only leads to nurse burnout, but it puts patients at an increased risk of infections, bedsores, pneumonia, MRSA, cardiac arrest and even accidental death. In fact, a 2010 study by the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing found that if New Jersey and Pennsylvania implemented safe staffing ratios their hospitals would see 14% and 11% fewer surgical deaths, respectively.
That’s why it’s critically important that you join me in supporting safe nurse-to-patient staffing ratios to make sure our nurses have the resources to care for their patients and keep them safe.
